[Tracking Every Minute]-Day 6 – The Wrong Routine

Day 6 is a Friday. I would assume I’m in the majority by assuming that my typical Friday’s are a bit softer than every other day of the week. Unfortunately for me, I also had a really soft Thursday (Day 5), which starts a routine in the wrong direction now.

I started this challenge to improve my awareness over how I am spending my time. I am currently very aware that if I make days like today and yesterday the norm, I am not going to achieve the goals I have set out for myself.

One positive thing is that I am noticing this in real time, not a month or year later. Now it’s on me to do something about it.

Here is what the day looked like:

6:30 – 8:30. Morning drop off. Again, I did not wake up ahead of everyone else. Second day in a row and second bad day, coincidence or causation?

8:30 – 9:30. Got a coffee and then grab some things at the super market before heading into the gym.

9:30 – 11:00. Gym time. Got a good pump in and was ready for the day…

11:00 – 1:00. I had this scheduled as my deep work block for the day, but something came up and I had to help out.

1:00 – 3:30. I had scheduled a day date with my wife. It’s often easier for us to get together during the day, when the kids are occupied at school, then it is at night, when we are running around all over town. Again, this is a huge perk of my lifestyle. Blessed to be able to do this.

3:30 – 6:00. Kids soccer game.

6:00 – 7:30. Picked up another kid at a party and hung out there for a bit.

7:30 – 9:00. We hung out at home and I did some errands around the house.

9:00 – 10:00. Went and picked up the last child.

What Went Wrong

Nothing. Saying that something went wrong when I had a day that included a date with my wife, then watching a kids soccer game before hanging out at kids party with friends feels ungrateful. Even knowing it was a truly amazing day, I also know that I did not put any time into achieving the goals I have set for myself.

This is the second day in a row that I have a great day, but did not do any deep work.

For the work week, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday were great work days. Thursday and Friday were awesome life days. With a weekend full of parenting commitments, I am not going to be able to make up any time.

Main Takeaways

  • I am truly blessed to have control over how I spend my time.
  • Kids activities take up more time then I thought. A game might only be an hour, but there is also an hour of travel each way, making it a 3 hour event.
  • Two days in a row of no deep work is an issue. With the weekend coming up, I might not work towards any of my goals for 4 days in a row.
