[Tracking Every Minute]-Day 19 – Holiday Rebound

This post is the nineteenth post in the #trackingeveryminute challenge. You can follow along here.

After my first series of holiday events, I settled back down into a normal routine today. If my focus yesterday was on enjoying the time I have with my family, today it’s making the most I have of the time available.

I do not have any holiday events today and my kids are are still in school (last day), so I need to focus on getting stuff done today.

As you can tell by all of the green blocks below, I succeeded.

6:00 – 6:30. Reading time. Looking back, it seems like Wednesdays and Thursdays are the most common days I make this happen. Not sure why.

6:30 – 8:30. Feed and drop off the kids for their last day of school.

8:30 – 9:30. Coffee shop communication block.

9:30 – 11:00. Work out.

12:00 – 1:00. Provided lunch for the staff of our community.

1:00 – 3:00. First deep work block of the day. A bit later than usual, but a good one.

3:00 – 3:30. Second deep work block of the day.

5:30 – 7:00. Another deep work block.

7:00 – 8:00. Dinner with the two kids that were home.

8:00 – 9:00. Another hour of work.

9:00 – 9:30. Shut it down by reading in bed.

Shifting Focus

Yesterday, family time was the most important thing. Today, working is. What gives?

It is a practical reality that you cannot work all of the time. We all know that, but for some reason it seems like we only optimize how we spend our time working.

Yesterday, with two holiday events, I wanted to make sure that I made the most of those events. How can I do that? First, with my dedicated presence. Second, trying to make the most out of it.

At my sons event I thought to myself, “how can I make this awesome for him?” Hopefully, just asking myself these types of questions makes me a better parent in the moment.

Today, its back to work. There are no holiday events, probably my last day of the year without them. So today I focused on getting work done. The question changed to, “how can I make the most of the time I have today?”

I’ve gotten much better at shifting focus with my attention to tracking every minute this month. Shifting back from weekend mode into weekday mode has really helped me strengthen this muscle.

Main Takeaways

  • Make the most of the time you have. Not just for work, not just for family, but all of it.
  • Habit and routine help make shifting focus easier.
